Multilayer Film Technology Overview
PolymerPlus is charged with the development and commercialization of value-added technologies and research services related to the fields of multilayered polymer films and thermoplastic polymeric materials.
Multilayer coextrusion is a polymer processing technology capable of producing films with up to thousands of layers with layer thicknesses in the micro- and nanoscale. Multilayered films with improved properties were successfully coextruded based on nanoscale induced structure-property relationships. A schematic of a two component layer multiplication process is shown below.
Layer Multiplication Process
The number of layers double with each layer multiplying element. An example of a “polymer A//Polymer B” alternating configuration with increasing number of multipliers is shown below. Films or sheets containing thousands of alternating layers can be processed using this approach.
Other Layer Configurations
Different layer configurations with up to 4 different polymer materials are also possible using coextrusion approach. Different structures have been successfully fabricated using coextrusion process.
